Guitarist and composer Sergio Assad is a unique personality on the international guitar scene. He belongs to the famous Assad family from Brazil where each of the family members has their own strong artist careers at the same time as they do concerts together where several generations participate. Together with his brother Odair, Sergio Assad has for decades honed his sound to perfectionism. And together, their virtuosity has inspired composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Dusan Bogdanovic and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg to write music directly for them. The Walls - Scandinavian premiere
Sergio Assad himself is a sought-after composer and at this year's edition of the Uppsala International Guitar Festival, his The Walls for solo guitar and guitar orchestra will be performed for the first time in Scandinavia.
It all started with a conversation between Sergio Assad and his American classical guitarist colleague Bill Kanengieser about the political development in the world with increasing nationalism. They asked themselves: is it possible as a musician to do something to stop the growing fear and the forces of hatred that are spreading? As an artist, there is only one alternative, says Sergio Assad, and that is to use the creative power and express common feelings that highlight the unreasonableness of building walls around people.
The Walls is a musical representation of historically infamous walls created to prevent migration and cultural exchange: the Great Wall of China, the Roman Hadrian Wall, the Berlin Wall and the West Bank Wall in Jerusalem. And an epilogue, "No More Walls", a commentary on the current debate about building physical walls between people.
Soloist Fred Holmlud
Fred was born and raised in Boden in Norrbotten County and is a driven and fearless classical guitarist who is now deepening his knowledge as a master's student at Malmö Academy of Music. With an interest in the guitar's cross-genre possibilities, Fred decided early on to invest wholeheartedly in a future in the spirit of the guitar. This was followed by several years of guitar studies at most prestigious schools around Sweden but also in Denmark and Germany where he refined his technical and stage skills with perfection as his goal. Fred has studied for teachers such as Professor Hubert Käppel, Eric Lammers, Frank Sjölander, Jesper Sivebaek and is now studying for Professor Göran Söllscher and David Hansson. He has also participated in masterclasses for Alvaro Pierri, Raphaël Feuillatre, Dmitry Tatarkin, Ignacio Rodes, Mark Eden, Gary Ryan and Colin Davin and others.
