Abrazo - Tango Mass

Magnificent final at this year's Uppsala International Guitar Festival
Sunday October 13 at 6.30 pm, University Hall
Ticket release August 27

We can promise a magnificent final at this year's Uppsala International Guitar Festival, there the guitar meets Uppsala's driving tradition in the General Song and Canorus. On Sunday the thirteenth of October, about a hundred singers, musicians and dancers will participate in the concert in the University Hall.

The Tango Mass "Abrazo" is a unique and uplifting work where composer Yamandu Pontvik brings together the expression of the tango with the shape of the fair. A sensual meeting where music, text and dance form an inner spiritual whole.

We also get to experience the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo – Tedesco's Romancero Gitano - Roman romances - for choir and guitar. The texts are taken from Federico Garcia Lorca's poem collection Poema del cante jondo. In total, about a hundred singers are musicians and dancers in the concert. We can promise a magnificent final at this year's Uppsala International Guitar Festival.

As a soloist we see Kristin Amparo who, with her artistry, her joy and passion is one of Sweden's most colorful singers. Participants also perform Ensemble Yamandu with international top musicians: Eva Lindal violin, Anna Lindal violin, Mikael Augustsson bandoneon, Juan Mendoza double bass, Dos Mas Uno with Marcelo Dellamea guitar, Hugo Dellamea guitar, and Ariel Sánchez percussion.

A dance interpretation of the "Abrazo" tango fair is made by Buenos Aires's finest tango couples, Andrea Kuna and Emmanuel Riquelme.

Yamandú Pontvik is a composer, choral conductor and baritone singer, born and raised in Uruguay living in Sweden since 1986. Yamandú has coined the concept of "culture frame" as a mental counter-fire to the more destructive word "culture rock". Yamandú has over the years written several works for choirs, including the Diversity Fair. He has worked with Latin American vocal music for many years and is a soloist in, among others, Misa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra. In 2010, Yamandú Kjell Lönnås was awarded the choir leader scholarship and in 2018 ST's and SCA's cultural scholarship.

Mario Castelnuovo–Tedesco (1895–1968), Italian composer and pianist, who escaped fascism to the United States. He belonged to moderate modernism, wrote commissioned works for Jascha Heifetz and Andrés Segovia and composed the music in many famous films.

Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) Spanish poet and playwright. He was a devoted supporter of the Spanish Republic and was assassinated by the Franco regime at the beginning of the Civil War.
